The first settlers on Mars: Their triumphs, failures, loves, and losses.

What Edgar Lee Masters did for his Spoon River, Illinois, Mary Jo Rabe creates on the planet Mars with her Blue Sunset. Over a hundred and fifty of the first settlers on Mars look back on their lives, their stories, their triumphs and failures, their loves and losses. A representative sample of what Earth had to offer, the good and the bad, the thoughtful and the clueless, the doers and the quitters, the lovers and the leaders, the vigilantes and the virtuous - they did what they had to do. They thought they would remake the red planet, but the planet changed them. These epitaphs tell their stories, their adventures, their crimes, and their good deeds while the universe has the last word on this first settlement.

Mary Jo Rabe grew up on a farm between Sabula and Miles in Eastern Iowa. She earned a B.A. in German and Mathematics from Michigan State University, completing her junior year in Freiburg, Germany, where she met her future husband Franz. She then completed her MLS at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, encountering and falling in love with science fiction for the first time. Mary Jo and Franz returned to Germany in 1976 and live in a small town in the Black Forest. Mary Jo has worked in a small special library in Freiburg, Germany, since August 1976. In Blue Sunset she combines her love of science fiction with her even older (since junior year in high school) love of Spoon River Anthology.
