Ray Bradbury died on the fifth of June 2012. He is credited with writing 27 novels and over 600 short stories. The first sci-fi book I bought was ‘The Midwhitch Cuckoos’ by John Wyndham, the second one was Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
I will always have a lot to thank Ray Bradbury for, not just for the wonderful books he wrote with their magical characters but for telling me how to write my stories, and I do not mean style, and definitely not his as that is the stuff that dreams are made of, but the length of the stories. Those who know of him know he always recommended short stories between five and ten thousand words.
After deciding to turn my hand to writing fiction, and after reading a hell of a lot of books, fiction and non-fiction, I took the late and great Ray Bradbury’s sound advice as he once said: ‘Don’t start out writing novels. They take too long. Begin your writing life instead by cranking out short stories, as many as one per week and take a year doing it, after which you will have over fifty-two stories and they can’t all be crap. And believe in yourself, write for fun, enjoy writing.’
Ray Bradbury wrote more than thirty books.
He was a close friend of Gene Kelly and dedicated his book, ‘Something Wicked this Way Comes,” to his memory, in return for influencing his life as an author.
He wrote mostly Science-Fiction, I say mostly as he once wrote the screenplay for Moby Dick.
I have not tried to emulate his style, I have however followed his advice and kept my stories short; well most of them.
You will find, among my Science-Fiction stories, Fantasy, Steampunk, and Crime, Sci-Fi Crime too, together with Time Travel and its anomalies, and now you know why this book was published in his memory.
Ray Bradbury; never to be forgotten, I thank you.
