Vergleich US und deutsches Schulsystem, Essay Uni Konstanz

In my essay I will compare American and German schools, focusing especially on the American highschool and the German "Gymnasium", which is one of the three secondary schools in Germany.

I spent my 12th grade in East Hall High School in Gainesville, Ga.,in the midst of the "bible belt", as an exchange student. I lived there in a hostfamily. My hostparents still had two sons of their own, at that time 13 and 16 years old. As it is quite common in the States we also had a number of dogs in our family. I will mainly write about my own experiences, which means that I will compare the East Hall High School in Gainesville with the Schubart Gymnasium in Ulm, Baden-Wurttemberg, where I spent the rest of my school career (after elementary school). I will focus especially on the Senior year in both schools. I know that there are many differences between the South and the rest of the U.S., but still I think that the schoolsystem is quite similar throughout the States.

There are a number of differences between the German and the American schoolsystem, and so I had to repeat my 12th grade here in Germany. In the States the students first go to elementary school, which is usually from first until sixth grade, then they usually go to junior high school, which is from 7th until 8th grade, and then they go on to highschool, which is usually from 9th until 12th grade. In Highschool you are either a freshman, sophomore, junior or a senior. In Germany, elementary school lasts from first until fourth grade, and then the students go either to the "Hauptschule" (5th- 9th grade), the "Realschule" (5th- 10th grade) or to the "Gymnasium" (5th- 12th grade). To which school you can go depends on your grades you got in elementary school. Of course, this separation according to your abilities has a lot of influence on the academic level of the schools.
