With his life falling apart, Dr. Ryan Parker uses a medical convention to escape the strictures of his life, from the hellish end of his marriage to a pending malpractice suit, with the bonus opportunity to pursue a pretty patient away from the complications and restrictions of Los Angeles.
Jayne is a single mother, struggling with loneliness and loss. She sees her two sons off on a vacation with their father and his girlfriend before leaving on her first vacation alone in years. She leaves for Costa Rica, ready for a break from the demands of single parenthood and a unfulfilling job, full of hope and longing.
The bar at the Hotel Mirador in Alajuela, Costa Rica, where Ryan and Jayne meet, is filled with expatriates, impostors and lost souls. The entanglements and deceptions amid the murderers and saints there are only the backdrop for much larger deceptions in their own lives. But then, there is no greater deception than that of self.
