Angela Brazil (1868-1947) wrote about female characters, with the intention of entertainment instead of moral instruction. In the first half of the 20th century, she has published about 50 books of fiction, mostly about girls’ boarding school. Popular in the 60’s, her books have been banned in schools for girls in the United Kingdom.

The writer made a big contribution to changing the nature of fiction for girls, featuring a female point of view, which was active, aware of current issues and independent, taking the adolescence as a period of transition and accepting that girls would have interests and concerns that should be shared and put into common practice.

Born in Preston, Lancashire, as the youngest daughter of Clarence Brazil, a factory manager, and Angelica McKinnel, the daughter of the owner of a transmission line in Rio de Janeiro. Her brothers were Amy Clarence and Walter. His mother, who had suffered during its Victorian schooling, was determined to raise their children in a free, creative and stimulating environment, encouraging them to be interested in literature, music and botany.

Around 30 years of age, she began writing her first school story: “The Fortunes of Philippa”, which was based on the experiences of her mother who grew up in Rio de Janeiro and attended an English boarding school. However, this first book was only published in 1906. Thus, her first published novel was “A Terrible Tomboy”, dating from 1904, which was not a school story. Heavily autobiographical, the story represented Brazil as the main character Peggy and her friend Leila Langdale appearing as Lilian. “The Fortunes of Philippa” was an instant success that started a long list of titles whose stories were in boarding schools and schools for girls. She published novels and tales about the subject.

The stories tend to focus on the relationships between students, including situations of alliances and jealousy, as well as the experience of the characters who feel excluded from the school community.
