The stories in this book accompany a number of Uyghurs in their daily lives,

A topic that is politically charged but unfamiliar to many:
In view of China's expansionary economic policy and the increasing importance of global trade relations, the question of human rights is often left far behind. The Uyghurs, in particular, who live in northwestern China, suffer discrimination and oppression and they fear for their culture and identity. The Chinese government justifies its repressive policies with the assertion that it is protecting state security.
The stories in this book take a look behind the scenes. They accompany a number of Uyghurs in their daily lives, and despite the sometimes distressing situations described here, they convey a sense of human warmth and great affection for these people, whose fate is barely registered by the world at large.

Ingrid Widiarto grew up in Kiel, Germany, graduated as a translator of Romance Languages in Germersheim, and worked as a translator and secretary for many years at the Freie Universität Berlin. Thanks to her language skills, her family and her travels, she gained insight into very diverse cultures and countries. But it was the plight of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang that touched her to such a degree that she set herself to raising awareness about their situation in China. She is the author of three German-language books on the Uyghurs and operates a website ( with which she tries to counter widespread prejudices and to demonstrate that the Uyghurs have a long history and a rich culture.
