A Concept for Vehicle Suspension Systems with Variable Mechanical Impedance Based on Magnetoand Electrorheological Fluid Actuators

In this paper the idea of a novel magneto- or electrorheological fluid actuator approach for vibration reduction in vehicle suspension systems is presented. It bases on extending the classical variable damping concept by variable stiffness. The resulting variable impedance actuator concept is investigated for on-off Skyhook-Control by numerical simulation of a simple quarter-car-model. The results show an improvement of selected vibration quality measures with respect to ride comfort and driving safety. However, a drawback of the proposed concept is the large amount of fluid necessary to achieve the necessary forces for valve blocking.
