Heat Generation Analysis in Piezoelectric Materials

One of the largest setbacks in the design of high power resonance piezoelectric ultrasonic motors and transducers is degradation of material properties due to temperature rise from mechanical losses. Correctly understanding heat generation and heat dissipation in these devices will allow for more compact designs, while maintaining high performance. This paper presents a characterization methodology to measure mechanical losses from temperature and vibration data. Mechanical loss measured from the temperature will better reflect the material properties in presence of heat generation than traditional impedance measurements because of nonlinearities in the material behaviour at high power.
