Most present magnetorheological (MR) actuators suffer from two main drawbacks if applied to haptic drives: bulkiness and lacking speed of response. We present a novel actuator which overcomes these disadvantages, achieving response times of 3 ms at a torque of 9 Nm. Additionally, it offers virtually play free operation, extremely low active inertia and very graceful reaction to overload conditions. Achieving peak speeds above 300 rpm, this drive is well suited for parallel and serial robot architectures as well as for single axis actuators.
