Within the tribe of Blood-and-Shadow, Masika and her brother – the only surviving members of their bloodline – have ignored the whispers of their brethren, the tortures of their Chief and the trials of the Gods.
Walking the gravel path in the village, the women on the leashes claw the ground with their withdrawn expression, while their mates do not show affection, nor sympathy for their pain. No one seemed to care the village was not the paradise of living it could be. It was a prison. The perimeter wasn’t a guide; it was an order.
Masika trusted her brother to keep her safe. The males with their vile desires and the threats of solitary seemed to never be a risk with him by her side. As long as he was there, she was safe. Her soul would never be carved into what they wanted and her body will always be hers.
The only prayer she ever needed to be answered within this awful hand of fate, was that he would never leave her. If he did, life would not be worthy of living…
