Neighbor Watchers - book 1
Amazing Gracie Mystery Series
Publication date: 01/12/2007
A retired Iowa farmer, Gracie Evans and her friends become involved in a murder.
An American version of Miss Marple, Gracie Evans's only comparison to Miss Marple is that she is elderly and finds herself in the wrong places at the wrong times. She is in no way the likeness personality wise of the genteel woman Miss Marple was. Born and raised on a farm in Iowa, Gracie is used to plain speaking and doing as she pleases which is far from what the rest of the lady like residents in the mansion appreciate. In this story set in a small town in the Midwest in 1903, Gracie has just retired from her farm and rented it out. She has no choice but to move to a rest home for women in town that is more elaborate than she would like. Gracie tries to resign herself to the fact she now lives in Moser Mansion while she wrestles with boredom. Her only diversion is rocking on the front porch with another resident, Melinda Applegate. It seems like such a harmless activity, when they start watching the neighbors through peek holes Gracie tore in the vines attached to the porch. It was harmless until late one dark night. Gracie and Melinda were watching with much interest the well known male citizens of Locked Rock sneaking into the side door of the lady of the evening's house across the street. The next morning, they find out the neighbor was murdered while they watched the traffic flow in and out of her house. Gracie and Melinda know who the killer is, but they are afraid to tell the sheriff. Without proof, they fear the killer will come after all of them at Moser Mansion. Turns out that is just what happens.
