“My goal is to get good grades in high school,” I can remember saying to myself at the age of 14. I always knew that my life in America was exceptional because out of all my mother’s children, I was the only one who was chosen to live in this magnificent country. But although my opportunities would be plentiful, I also learned that in order to be successful I would have to endure various obstacles.

Being thousands of miles away from my closest family members who lived in Jamaica, I had to balance nostalgia and self-determination just to excel in life. I participated in numerous programs in high school, received excellent grades, won first place in essay contests, began writing my first novel, and graduated as class valedictorian.

After those accomplishments, I had major setbacks and was advised by some to abolish my dreams of attending college. Nevertheless, I ignored the naysayers and graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 2002 (completed all my classes in December 2001).

During my last semester at UMASS Boston, my husband and I started our beautiful family. Then in 2002 I strove to obtain employment with just my English degree, but that goal eluded me. Therefore, since I had experience working with the children at my former church, I established my own company, Prophecies: Theatrical Dance Ministries. Because of this organization, my family and I were able to host several dance events and talent shows in Massachusetts.

Then in 2004 I became a substitute teacher for the Fall River School Department and became a full-time teacher in 2005. Two years later, with five children and a husband at my side, I earned my master’s degree. Pursuing my master’s degree was one of my most difficult tasks because I had to work full-time, go to school full-time, take care of my children full-time, be a wife full-time, and still find time to write and self-publish my books.

I have been a dedicated and ingenious English teacher at my job since 2005. All types of students have entered my classroom, and they have all whined about the work being too challenging. Then they thank me 10 months later because they realized that I was preparing them for their next educational level.

I visualize myself as a vessel with multiple talents within. Thus, each day after pouring resources into the lives of my students, my husband and I have to do the same for our own children, so they too will be well-equipped to eventually evolve into prolific adults.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically... Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” I am convinced that my experiences have transformed me into a leader who is determined to demonstrate to others the value of an education. Therefore, I will attain this objective through my online articles, my poetry and novels, homeschooling, and teaching at an academic facility.
