In an African village setting, Katanga was charged with a crime he committed (and admittedly guilty) some twenty years earlier as a rebel fighter during his country’s civil war. Now forced as a sober adult to confront one woman who has the courage to summon him before a somewhat new generation of villagers as they discuss reconciliation.
From Katanga’s testimony, to the twist in the story (it's a great one) at the end, the author aptly compares the hands-on village justice system with the Western distancing system of prosecutor vs. defendant's lawyer.
