In times where companies operate and compete worldwide in terms of cost, quality and time the need to think globally arises for all business strategies (David, 2001, p. 4). The possibilities to minimize costs and to increase return on sales are mostly exhausted or require a high amount of effort to be realized (Kuhn & Hellingrath, 2002, p. 1). Thus, topics, such as outsourcing and developing of new markets, arise constantly and gain further importance (Luthans & Doh, 2009, p. 2).
The concept of strategic material planning firstly introduced by Ford W. Harris in 1913 aims at minimizing total cost of sourcing and holding inventory, thus, aiming at realizing efficiency gains in the supply chain (Harris, 1913).
Emerging markets, such as Indonesia, offer tremendous growth potential for global players as a report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) indicates (BCG, 2010, p. 11). Especially, megacities, such as Indonesia‟s capital Jakarta, with more than ten million inhabitants function as relevant “key markets” when entering a new national market (Auswärtiges Amt, 2011; BCG, 2010, p. 11).
The work has the objective to present the basic theoretical foundations in the development of strategic material planning and compare the theory to a practical example of Mercedes-Benz in Indonesia.
