Talking about possessions, singing a song and writing new verses
ABOUT THIS UNIT

Aim:

Students talk about their possessions, using 'have got' and possessive pronouns. They sing a song and write new verses.

- Level: beginners (A1)
- Time: approx. 5 hours

Procedure:

Students learn the names of nine every-day objects, which are reinforced by two games. They learn and practise the structures 'have got / has got' and 'in my/your/... hand / bag / pocket' in positive, negative and question forms. By completing clearly arranged grammar tables, they obtain a systematic overview of these structures.

With further vocabulary input, the class sings the song 'He's got the whole world in his hands'. Students write additional verses, which are also sung.

THE 'ENGLISH FOR CHRISTIANS' SERIES

'English for Christians' prepares language learners to interact successfully in a Christian English-speaking environment. This series of supplementary materials can be used alongside any course book. It covers a range of Christian topics, skills and language levels and is suitable for Christians of all denominations.

All materials are photocopiable and ready for classroom use. They include:

- the students' edition (handouts in original A4 page size)
- interleaved teacher's notes (scaled-down student pages and teaching instructions side by side on a landscape-orientation A4 page)

The materials are aimed at students who:

- work or plan to work abroad as a missionary or in a Christian environment
- study theology in English or study English while attending a theology college
- attend international church services, Bible studies, Christian conferences, work camps or holidays
- prefer Christian to secular teaching content

Whereas most Christian EFL* materials seek to convert learners to the Christian faith, this series is designed for students who are already Christians, and does not follow an evangelistic approach.

With 12 years’ experience as a language teacher, I’m now a part-time writer of English teaching materials. I hold the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) and have completed International Training Network’s course “The Christian teacher”. With my diverse church background, I’ve experienced a range of different denominations, countries and nationalities. This has shown me that there are specific skills and vocabulary items that Christians need in an English-speaking context. So I’ve set out to create varied, communicative learning materials, which I hope you will find both useful and enjoyable!
