Active Vibration Control – Enabler for Fuel Efficient Drives

Abstract:
Smaller and more efficient engines in lightweight cars present the industry with a new set of challenges: Consumption-optimized drives such as engines with cylinder deactivation, hybrid drives, and electric drives fitted with range extenders can under certain conditions generate stronger vibrations. Lightweight structures are more sensitive to vibrations due to their reduced mass. The interaction of these two factors can lead to increased noise and vibrations in the vehicle interior. The use of Active Vibration Control (AVC) systems can help to solve this conflict in goals, thereby opening up new opportunities for lightweight design. This lecture explains the principles and potential system configurations of AVC systems for automotive applications and presents the
requirements regarding the system components (actuators, sensors, ECU). The potential of this technology is explained with the help of current prototype applications. The findings from vehicle tests with variously configured AVC systems will be reported.
