Suitable Coupon Design for Assessment of Interface Strength in Overmoulded Structures Made from Fibre Reinforced High-performance Thermoplastics

Since there is no standard method for testing the strength of overmoulding interfaces yet, the presented study aims at the development of dedicated mechanical test methods. Based on literature and standards, a lap shear and a ribon-plate specimen are developed.
This paper presents a brief literature review, followed by the design rationale including considerations of the process-dependence of the interface strength. Numerical analyses of both structural behaviour and the overmoulding process are used to optimize the specimen geometries for first failure to occur at the interface. Optimised specimens are manufactured using typical process parameters for carbon fibre-reinforced PEEK. First results for the interface strength of overmoulded components are presented finally.
