Abstract:
Despite the various advantages of thermoplastic composites, their use in engineering applications has not reached its full potential due to inadequate intermediate materials and processes. Hybrid bicomponent fibers are a new class of preform material where individual fibers are clad in a thermoplastic sheath. This material architecture promotes increased formability and full wet-out of the preform, thus allowing the fabrication of complex parts at reduced costs. However, large scale manufacturing of such fibers is challenging due to the high melt viscosity of thermoplastics. A kiss-roll coating method was introduced to transfer thermoplastic material onto the fiber via a roll, allowing increased processing speeds. Combined with the understanding of the influence of the most important coating parameters, the success of kiss-roll coating as a viable manufacturing process for hybrid bicomponent fibers as novel preform materials is demonstrated. Successfully scaling of this process would greatly reduce overall production costs and therefore broaden the market potential of thermoplastic composites.
