Advances in Fiber Distribution Analysis of Injection Molded Parts Using Direct Fiber Simulation

Application of thermoplastic composite parts in aerospace industry has been recently increasing. Strength of short fiber reinforced thermoplastic parts is depending on fiber orientation in the parts and controlling technique of fiber orientation is getting more important to improve part strength. On the other hand, since existing analysis method cannot predict fiber orientation accurately especially in core layer areas, actual molding trials cannot be eliminated to evaluate fiber orientation and/ or confirm the part strength. In this study, accurate analysis method for fiber orientation is developed by utilizing Direct Fiber Simulation (DFS) technique applied in 3D TIMON and X-ray CT scanning. As a result, it is confirmed that +/-20 % of simulation accuracy is achieved on Glass fiber filled polyamide (PA9T-GF50 wt%) injection molded flat plate.
