Abstract:
An intercostal is a part of the surrounding structure of a door in an aircraft fuselage. The stress field in that part is significantly nonhomogeneous. The development of the part that is optimized in the shape, contour and layup is described. Different thicknesses are applied to use the material more effectively and to achieve a lower weight in comparison to the constant thickness shell. The suitable thermoforming process for the tailored blank was verified, and the demonstrators were manufactured. The mechanical test results of the intercostal were compared to the MKP strength analysis.
