Continuous Welding Technology of CF/PPS Composites Using High Frequency Induction Heating

This study aims to reveal the induction welding behavior of CFRTP composites by high-frequency induction heating method. This welding system consists of a high frequency induction heating device (Pearl Kogyo Co., Ltd., frequency:1.8 ~ 2.2 MHz, maximum output power: 3 kW), induction heating coil (double D type coil) and
pressing and cooling roller. In this induction heating device, a impedance matching box is small size compared to self-excited matching type. Moreover, the heating efficiency is extremely high. The material used is woven CF/PPS laminates (TenCate, CETEX®, Vf=45 vol%, t=1.2 mm). The effects of feed speed of the coil, induction heating power and pressing load on induction welding behavior of CFRTP composites and joining strength were investigated. The temperature of laminates surface and welding surface were measured by K type thin thermocouple and an infrared thermometer. From this experimental result, it was found that the temperature was increased with increasing the induction heating power, and it was revealed that there was optimum induction heating power in order to obtain high joining strength.
