MSM Polymer Composite Actuator Materials

Single crystalline MSMAs have a high maximum magnetic field induced strain (MFIS ~6 %) and they can be actuated by moderate magnetic fields. However, their manufacturing is complex and demanding and it would be interesting to find alternatives for single crystal MSMAs. Despite of several efforts, the MFIS obtained with e.g. cast polycrystals have so far been only minor. Our aim is to create magnetic shape changing composites by incorporating the MSMA in a polymer matrix. In the present work we report MFIS of 5 % of the MSM polymer composite sample.
