Controlling Dynamic Behaviour of Magnetic Shape Memory Based Actuators

T. Schiepp, M. Maier, E. Pagounis, M. Laufenberg
ETO MAGNETIC GmbH, Stockach, Germany

Magnetic Shape Memory (MSM) actuators may offer an increased cycling operation. Therefore a deeper understanding of relevant fatigue mechanisms is indispensable and will help to design MSM actuators that offer advantages compared to today’s solutions. Overshoot of the mass-spring system can appear which can lead to mechanical damages. Friction effects which are also reinforced by Maxwell forces contribute to the actuator failure as well. Results are presented which help to understand failure mechanisms of MSM materials operating in MSM actuators and to improve the high-cycle fatigue behaviour of these.
