Realization of Actuator Systems for an Implantable Artificial Accommodation System

We report on the first realization of laboratory prototypes of two actuator system concepts for driving axial-shift and lateral-shift optics of an implantable accommodation system. Both are based on a piezoelectric actuator and a planar silicon linkage comprising a compliant mechanism. Scaling factors of 1.5 and 1.2 were applied to the designs to fit the actuator systems into accordingly scaled implant demonstrators. Fabrication of the linkages is based on deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) of single-crystal silicon. The assembled actuator systems both achieve full displacement during operation with comfortable force reserves remaining for lens displacement against gravity.
