Energy Harvester Using a Magnetic Non-Linear Spring

In order to optimize vibration energy harvesting, we studied the contribution of a non-linear stiffness in the system. The use of the repulsive force between magnets of same polarity constitutes a non-linear spring which is adjoined with an electromagnetic generator to harvest the energy.
We built a mathematic model to evaluate the impact of each parameter. The simplest model considers the generator as a motor constant, a constant inductance and an internal resistance. The more complex model uses EF simulation results to calculate these values at each time step. To validate the models, a prototype was built, coupling a magnetic non-linear spring and a single phase generator patented by MMT. The energy harvester was measured on static and dynamics conditions.
This study allowed us to point out the advantages and drawbacks of this kind of structures as well as to highlight the most important parameters for the calculation of such devices.
