SMA Wearable Actuated Textile

This presentation proposes an architecture for shape-memory-alloys-based wearable actuators. Different ways of embedding Nitinol wires in a fabric background have been studied, in order to create an active textile able to fulfil a wide range of requirements in terms of portability, displacement and maximum force. Since most of the human movements involve flexion, this new actuator has been developed to reach remarkable results in bending. For this reason, the definition of a base structure, which could directly be used on existing clothes, has been considered a fundamental aspect. Moreover, an experimental approach has been defined, so as to get a deep
knowledge of the most important features of this active textile; in turn, such characterization is an essential step for dimensioning the actuator for a specific application. Two prototypes have been designed and built to show the versatility of the proposed architecture: an active glove and an active kneepad. Both the prototypes show promising performances in terms of displacement and force. The potential applications of this technology span from the rehabilitation field, to training or videogames force feedback devices. Simplicity, adaptability and performance predictability are the keywords of the entire work.
