Actuator Control – Power Electronics, Control and Self-Sensing

Smart actuators can be used as actuating elements in various applications or even as alternative to conventional electromechanical actuators. Even though the underlying technology is different also smart actuators require appropriate feeding and control concepts including power electronics, further superimposed control loops based on certain sensor information completing the actuation system of the so defined device layer. In order to design the basic actuator control, the electrical behaviour of smart actuators can be distinguished into either resistivecapacitive or -inductive behaviour. While actuators with inductive behaviour can be driven by common voltageinduced
power electronics, actuators with strongly capacitive response require current-induced power converters typically at high voltages increasing considerable the size and costs of the device layer for such smart actuators. For both current- and voltage-induced power electronics special converter topologies have to be designed to ensure fast and accurate control signals as well as a high efficiency. In the present review the latest R&D results of this ongoing process are presented. Furthermore, a special focus is given on superimposed control loops of the so called system layer utilizing self-sensing properties of smart actuators. A particular advantage is given when the sensor information due to self-sensing is inherently generated by the driving power electronics reducing the total costs and size of the actuation system.
