Piezoelectric Motors and Their Industrial Applications

K. Spanner, B. Koc
Physik Instrumente (PI) GmbH & Co. KG, Karlsruhe, Germany

Abstract:
All piezo motors have one common principal function that is the usage of microscopic vibrations, which are converted into continuous or stepping motion through frictional coupling. However, functional principle of each motor varies considerably in construction/assembly and drive specifications so one can still categorize these motors into three groups; Piezo Walk-Drive, Inertia-Drive and Resonance-Drive.

Regardless of the motor type, piezo motors add important features to the integrated systems, where conventional actuators cannot fulfil these features easily such as; small size, direct drive, self-locking and nonmagnetic.

In this review, various industrial and commercial applications of piezo motors are presented.
