Piezo-Actuated Hydraulic Transducer for Active Noise Reduction

Abstract:
In modern aircraft hydraulic systems the hydraulic pressure is generated by axial piston pumps. Those pumps also induce unwanted fluid-borne noise (pressure ripple) and herewith structure-borne noise (vibrations). This paper introduces an electrically powered and frequency adaptable noise attenuation device. A piezo ceramic actuator was used as active component. Simulations were done using a numerical optimization process to maximize the output ripple (anti-phase to piston pump ripple). Besides, a prototype was tested in a dedicated fluidborne noise test bench.
