Advancement of Dielectric Elastomer Actuators Towards Industrial Applications

While the functionality of dielectric elastomer actuators has been demonstrated through the first niche consumer products, their incorporation within industrial products with stringent requirements has not yet been achieved. To this end, the DIELASTAR consortium has been established to advance the state of technology for dielectric elastomer actuators in industrial applications. This contribution provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of consortium progress in all aspects of the technology including: polymer chemistry, electrode materials and techniques, mass production technologies, modelling and simulation, power electronics and control, and future prospects for industrialization based on initial prototype designs.
