Damping Concepts for Medium Voltage Reclosers Drive Actuators

Bi-stable linear actuators based on permanent magnets are holding the armature of the medium voltage reclosers actuators in one of its two stable positions. Moreover, in order to operate the recloser, a mechanical spring system is forcing the armature from closed to open position and a single coil for both functions is releasing the opening spring as well as closing the mechanism against the spring force. This paper shall describe concepts used for improving the damping of the armature impact at its extreme switching positions. A combination of different measures based on different principal approaches guides to an optimized solution. Beside the description of the different mechanical and control approaches, methods are presented to achieve a set of optimal design parameters.
