A Closed-Ended Cylindrical Linear Voice Coil Actuator with Improved Force vs. Stroke Characteristics

M. Godkin
BEI Kimco Magnetics, Vista, USA

This paper is a result of a continuous effort to improve a patented cofiguration of the actuator developed by BEI Kimco Magnetics. A Force vs. Stroke requirement determines a specific configuration of an actuator. The shape of the Force vs. Stroke curve is influenced by the armature reaction, which distorts magnetic field in the air gap created by the permanent magnets and leads to the slope of the Force characteristic toward the end of the travel in both directions of motion. The closed-ended configuration of a cylindrical Linear Voice Coil Actuator has some advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that magnetic flux is split in half, and the magnetic circuit of such an actuator is less saturated that the magnetic circuit of the open-ended actuator of the same size. As a result, unlike the open-ended design, the Force vs. Stroke characteristics for both directions are much more symmetrical relative to the mid-stroke position. The disadvantage of this design is that it is more difficult to assemble and disassemble such a unit.
A Boundary Element Method was used to optimize the size of the spherical cavity and to calculate the Force vs. Stroke characteristics of a cylindrical closed-ended Linear Voice Coil Actuator.
