Bistable Rotary-Actuator – Based on Shape Memory Alloys

Abstract:
Actuators based on Shape-Memory-Alloys (SMA) show all characteristics required by the industry today. These are lightweight and energy savings in an oil dependent modern world. Solution methods for these items are the well-studied Shape-Memory-Alloys. In particular the alloy consisting of nickel and titanium (NiTi) is the most widely used due to the large shape-memory-effect, its high stability and corrosion resistance. The bistable Rotary-Actuator uses this technology to realize a rotational movement with two stable start/end-positions.
