Innovations are new products introduced into the markets. The success of German industry is strongly based on those innovations, especially in the drive business. Ideas for new drive solutions offering advantages to their customers are coming from the markets, from enterprises as well as from universities and research institutes. This review starts with the actual demands and requests from customers and markets in the drive business. Those are followed by a reflection, how the constructive interact between the academic research at universities and institutes on one hand, and industry on the other hand should be organized. In order to underline the actual trends of demands in the field of small electric drives some application examples are presented.
