Load-Conforming Design and Manufacturing of Active Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Polymer Structure with Integrated Shape Memory Alloy Wires for Actuation Purposes

Shape memory alloys (SMA) are already used in many applications. Application opportunities can be multiplied by combining shape memory alloy wires with fiber reinforced plastics. However, integrating an actuation function in fiber reinforced structures requires a carefully chosen design to avoid interface failure, extensive space requirements or poor reproducibility. This work presents a new approach to integrate SMA wires in a load-conforming way, using semi-finished SMA grid structures. The SMA grid provides an advanced load introduction, an electrical network and a high reproducibility all rolled into one. Experimental actuation tests demonstrating very high deflection were used to verify the load carrying capacity of the new design.
