Experimental Study and Modeling of Non-Contact Piezoelectric Rotary Motor Using Giant Electro-rheological Fluid

Abstract:
A bidirectional non-contact rotary motor using a piezoelectric torsional vibrator and giant electrorheological (GER) fluid is developed. The driving force of this motor can be actively controlled by varying the electric field strength to the GER fluid. This motor generates 1.04 mN m torque when the electric field of 2 kV/mm with 30% duty cycle is applied to the GER fluid, offering torque at least one order of magnitude larger than those of other types of non-contact piezoelectric motors. A numerical model is also built, based on the equivalent circuit and the characteristics of Bingham plastic, to understand the torque transmission mechanism in order to optimize the motor structure.
