Parallel Piezomotor Operation

Abstract:
Standing wave piezomotors are known as fast and accurate (sub-μm) positioning actuators. Despite these attractive features, the driving force capability of such motors is limited due to their intrinsic operational characteristic based on friction mechanisms. One possible method for increasing the driving force of a piezomotor system is by applying multiple piezomotors in a parallel configuration. In this paper, the obtainable performance when two ultrasonic piezomotors are connected in parallel are presented and a dynamic model which is able to describe the behaviour of such a configuration is presented. The model is able to predict the behaviour of such configuration for amplitude control.
