Capabilities of Magneto-Rheological Suspensions in Landing Gears

Semi-active suspensions are able to adapt their behaviour to the specific necessities of each operation phase of the vehicle. Their application in the aerospace industry is very attractive, specifically in landing gear systems. In this paper, the capacities and improvement of performances that the implementation of a magneto-rheological valve (MRV) in an oleo-pneumatic damping system would bring along are presented. Lord 132DG® MRF has been selected for this application for its good magnetizing capacity and low density. Experimental results of this magneto-rheological fluid’s behaviour in different working regimes and simulated performances of the whole damping system are analysed.
