Development of Multi-Mode Vibrotactile Haptic Actuator for Mobile Devices

In this paper, vibrotactile haptic actuator which can create multiple haptic effects was designed and its performance was experimentally evaluated. Voice coil motor type electromagnetic actuator was designed and driving force, generated by coil and magnet, was estimated from the results of electromagnetic field analysis. Furthermore, modal characteristics (natural frequency and mode shape) and structural characteristics (deformation and stress distribution) were investigated by using finite element analysis. After manufacturing of the new haptic actuator, the actuating force and sensations according to driving frequencies were experimentally measured and evaluated. The magnitude of actuating force was greater than or equal to conventional vibration motor for each driving frequency. It was also observed that sharp, deep and heavy sensation can be generated in high, low and superposed frequency operation, respectively.
