Abstract:
Haptic information is present during every manual action in daily life. The sense of touch is of particular importance for surgical interventions as surgeons complement visual cues with touch such as perception of interaction forces, stiffness and texture. Surgeons are deprived from haptic feedback in modern surgical robotic interventions. The increasing popularity of these interventions calls for solutions to restore the haptic link between surgeon and target tissue. This work introduces a 1-dof kinaesthetic and tactile display system in a configuration that allows a tight integration of both types of feedback. Users can interact with both devices and experience various inputs that are rendered through one or both complementary senses. In this work a pulsating bump is used as an example. An experiment is designed to localize the position and identify the haptic properties of such event. It is found that a good integration of kinaesthetic and tactile rendering improves detection capability.
