Development of a Novel Damper for Front-Loaded Washing Machine Featuring SMA Actuator

In this study, a new SMA (shape memory alloy) damper is developed for suspension system of front-loaded washing machines. The damper is actuated by a spring SMA actuator and its actuating force is amplified by a wedge mechanism and exerts on the inner cylindrical face of the damper housing to create friction against the housing. The friction between the wedge and housing produces damping force of the damper. After an introduction to SMA actuators and the suspension system of front-loaded washing machines, configuration of the proposed SMA damper was presented. Modeling of the proposed SMA damper is then performed as damping force of the damper is derived. Based on the modeling, a prototype SMA damper is designed and manufactured. In order to evaluate performance of the prototype SMA damper, experimental work on the prototype damper is conducted. From the experiment, performance characteristics of the prototype damper such as step is obtained and presented.
