Driven by regulations focused on lower emissions, automotive OEMs are targeting weight reduction.
Recognizing this challenge, SABIC has developed new thermoplastic hybrid composite material forms for use in an overmoulding process. This paper contains a research study showing a semi-automated method that selects the right fibre type for every single part or ply in an assembly, such the cost per kg weight saved is minimized. The focus is on the development of a methodology for cost-optimization, using finite element analysis.
