Abstract:
This article describes an optimization methodology that allows exploring wide design space at reduced calculation cost. It has been developed to help engineer that design tailored preform composite molded part. It uses the stiffness matching optimization methodology, a multi-step approach that give first the ideal fiber orientation and thickness in each area of the part, then the better lay-up to match the target. This method has been implemented inside Altair OptiStruct® as QSD® software to be usable by every design office. A clustering algorithm is included to identify homogeneous areas, helping to build a process-compatible tailored preform.
Process simulations are used to know fiber orientation after forming and to determine the flat preform shape corresponding to the final part, allowing better part cost estimation. This tool enables 'design to cost 'strategy, whatever the chosen lay-up process, and especially for the QSP® high volume preforming and stamping process.
