an Online Process Monitoring System

This presentation focuses the development of an online process monitoring system for MM-Welding´s LightWWeightTM technology, which is currently used for inserting connection elements into honeycomb and/or foamed core sandwich panels. The connection element serves as fixation point for functional parts or as an adapter to receive reversible fixation elements such as screws. A typical application is the connection of a functional part (i.e. hinge) to a parcel shelf or a trunk floor of a car. The connection is inserted into the sandwich board without pre-drilling a hole using a high process speed (_ 1 sec.) ultrasonic process in combination with a high resolution online process monitoring system. The aim of this project is to understand (i) whether the different phases of the insertion process can be differentiated and (ii) which additional monitoring techniques should be included to allow for process optimization and process integrated production control. Combining the online high resolution timeforce record with acoustic emission and high speed optical records indicate that an online monitoring process can differentiate among the different phases and may also be able to recognize potential critical insertion problems in order to allow automated, online process quality control.
