Trends, Developments and Qualification of the Thermoplastic Induction Welding Process in
Aerospace Applications
M. Labordus, KVE Composite Group BV, The Hague, The Netherlands

KVE has been developing their induction welding process for carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastics since 2001. The early applications were all in carbon fabric PPS. Several demonstration products have been designed and assembled since then by induction welding. Tier 1 aerospace suppliers have obtained commercial licenses for KVE’s welding process for the assembly of rudders, elevators and access panels. Over the last couple of years, a shift could be seen towards higher-end polymers like PEKK and PEEK, and to laminates manufactured using (automatically placed) UD tapes. Also thicker laminates for higher loaded structures have been tested. This has led to further development of the induction welding process, both with respect to the tooling and equipment but also for the FEA based simulation models. To assist in the qualification of the welding of these new materials, KVE has developed a standardized coupon weld set-up, which allows for welding single lap shear and L- and Tpull-off coupons, and assists in validation of the improved FEA simulation models.
