VICTREX AE™250 – A Novel Polyaryletherketone Polymer Suited to Automated Tape Placement and
Out of Autoclave Processing
S. Green, Victrex plc, Thornton Cleveleys, United Kingdom
Abstract:
In this work, unidirectional tapes made with a new Polyaryletherketone (PAEK) polymer were laid by hand and by automated fibre placement (AFP) to prepare a series of laminates with fibre orientations and thicknesses consistent with a broad range of mechanical tests. The results of the study show that the new polymer, VICTREX AE™ 250, a lower melting material than the related polymer, PEEK, processes equally well under oven consolidation and press consolidation to create highly consolidated laminates with substantially identical physical and mechanical properties, opening a broader range of manufacturing options for aerospace parts.
