The notion of transcendence is closely related to the tendencies and objectives of Heaney's poetics. Station Island poems depict the quarrel between free creative imagination and the constraints of religious, political and domestic obligation. They also express the poet's need to deconstruct these 'prescriptive myths', as Heaney calls them, and attain, by means of art, a more comprehensive vision of reality. The paper focuses on the metalanguage of Heaney's poem in order to abstract and formulate the relevant principles of his poetics.
