Machine Technologies for Thermoplastic Composite Blanks

In recent years, research and industry have been paying much attention to the development of fast and efficient manufacturing technologies for 2-dimensional thermoplastic (tailored) composite sheets and blanks. Two basic strategies have emerged differing in the chronological order of the process steps stacking, impregnation, consolidation and solidification, leading to different production machine requirements. The available systems can be characterized and differentiated by their specific process parameters pressure, temperature, available residence time of these parameters and by features like the processability of local changes in sheet thickness. Further, these systems differ regarding their key performance indicators like material throughput [kg/h] and specific production costs [€/kg]. This paper will present a comprehensive overview and comparison of the available system.
