A melt impregnation based UD tape manufacturing process with an inline quality assurance was developed at the Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) at the RWTH Aachen University as part of a public project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Special attention has to be paid to the interdependency between UD tape properties and resulting laminate properties in dependence of the used laminate manufacturing process. In this paper the correlations between measured process data (spreading quality) with the resulting tape quality (e.g. impregnation quality and fibre distribution) is analysed. Furthermore, the mutual influence of the tape quality as well as the laminate production process on the final laminate properties (mechanical and morphological) is investigated. The quality data determined online during the tape production can be used to optimize the downstream processing of the tape.
