This specialist DB book aims to serve as a training manual and information base to DB Netz AG employees involved in the planning and execution of work on permanent ways and the permanent-way companies; it provides information on the complex interplay of personnel, machinery, devices and permanent-way material used during preventive maintenance of the permanent-way.

The work techniques used during the renewal and installation of tracks and turnouts, including ballast cleaning and mechanical tamping and lining, are described clearly and comprehensively. The book looks at track formation improvement methods and also the rectification of individual defects.

Furthermore, the reader is also familiarised with inspection and scheduled maintenance tasks and the acceptance of permanent-way work.

The relatively new topic of ballast-less permanent-ways (slab tracks) is addressed and the authors also take a look at what further developments have been made to permanent-way machines and work techniques.

Lothar Marx worked for DB Netz AG until 2002 (retired); he also managed work groups responsible for the preventive maintenance of high speed lines and installation techniques for turnouts. He was the manager of the regulations expert group and a consultant for RENFE for preventive maintenance of the high speed line Madrid – Seville

After completing his engineering degree, Dietmar Moßmann started working for DB. He was a clerk at the DB design department Mainz (ZTL) for alignment design (new HSR-lines/upgrading existing lines), track and permanent way design.
He was also a permanent way project manager in Berlin (reconstruction of city rail system).
He took partial leave of absence to work at DE-Consult on a number of overseas projects and at Bahntrans Frankfurt as the manager of the Civil Engineering/Building laws department and at Siemens AG Berlin as the manager of the Permanent way/Structural Engineering department (turnkey projects). Since 2001 he works as a freelancer for DE-Consult.

He took leave of absence to work at DE-Consult Frankfurt (Taiwan / Köln/ Portugal) in project management.
He was involved in permanent way program planning at the DB Netz AG office in Frankfurt, and was also a clerk for preventive maintenance processes and procedures at DB Netz AG Frankfurt headquarters; manager of the regulations expert group.
